Afrowrite’s Weblog

Hello world!

Posted by: afrowrite on: March 12, 2008

Welcome to afrowrite blog. I shall be discussing issues related to life, writing and publishing, especially in Africa. By life I mean everything that you encounter when you live in this great continent – politics, religion, business, tourism etc, and of course, writing and publishing.

Who am I?

By way of introducing myself, let me tell you how I got into writing, publishing and all that. I got into it in stages – over a long period of time.

Stage One. I call it the great yearning. I dont know exactly when this yearning came upon me. But here I was, wondering about famous people-where they just like me, standing on two tiny feet or where they giants – real big trees in the forest of humanity?

Stage two. This I call the research stage. This is when I realised I could become a writer, that I wanted to become a writer. I decided to research, to read anything I could. Many times I read a book in a day.

Stage three. This I call the rejection. It comes when you announce that you want to be a writer. Editors and publishers will reject your manuscripts, but these are not the fundamental rejections that kill budding writers. The rejection that kills would-be writers comes before they start writing. It comes from relatives and friends. They laugh and ridicule your ideas – and even refuse to talk to you! If you dont know how to overcome these, dont bother reading about How to Handle Rejection From Publishers. You will not have any manuscripts to give to the publishers in the first place!

Again, welcome to this new blog. I shall appreciate your comments (alas, Im still trying to be famous!)
